Firefighters work to contain wildfires as victims begin the road to recovery

Firefighters are working against strong winds as they try to contain the Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires.

Here are the latest developments:

  • More than 6 million people in the Los Angeles area remain under a critical fire threat, as firefighters face moderate-to-strong Santa Ana winds while they continue to try to contain the wildfires.
  • “Particularly Dangerous Situation” red flag warnings are in effect Wednesday morning for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura, issued by the National Weather Service.
  • A windblown dust and ash advisory covering close to 17 million residents is in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday. People in areas impacted by ash should wear proper respiratory masks to help protect against potential health problems, a city health official said.
  • The Eaton and Palisades fires are now the most destructive and second-most destructive in Southern California’s history, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
  • At least 25 deaths are connected to the fires, 17 from the Eaton Fire and eight from Palisades Fire, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
  • People who have lost their homes and loved ones are trying to begin the recovery process. FEMA officials are on the ground offering assistance.
