  • Kia’s plans to join the Tesla Supercharger network on January 15 have been delayed, according to the company.
  • A Kia spokesperson confirmed to Car and Driver that plans to join the network have been pushed to early spring.
  • According to the brand, the delay was caused by “technical issues,” although no specifics were laid out.

Although Kia was planning to join Tesla’s Supercharger network (now known as NACS or the North American Charging Standard) as soon as tomorrow, January 15, those plans have been put on hold for now. The Korean automaker had announced an initial date of January 15, 2025, though that date has now been pushed back to an unspecified day in early spring. A representative for Kia confirmed the news to Car and Driver and cited technical issues as the reason for the delay.

The most recent word from the company comes via an updated release which plans for access to start by the end of the first quarter of this year. Any Kia EV customers who purchased their car on or after September 4, 2024, will be able to receive a free CCS-to-NACS adapter. Anyone who purchased a Kia EV before then will have to buy their adapter.

The current list of automakers that have already joined, or have agreed to join, the NACS system is listed here. Ford, General Motors, and Rivian were among the first to join—with GM and Rivian owners gaining access through an official adapter that costs $225. Though all three are mechanically identical and sourced directly from Tesla, Ford’s official adapter is slightly more expensive at $230.
